For those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle for a while, Long Island is a good option. Enjoy a day on the beach at Jones Beach or Fire Island. Be prepared for crowds though, particularly in summer. If you want to soak up some movie star atmosphere try the more exclusive Hamptons on the islands far east side. The Wine District is a pleasant day’s meandering through vineyards and old-fashioned villages in particular the 17th century town of Orient.

Just north of New York City lies the Hudson Valley, a charming area of picturesque towns and pleasant countryside, particularly in Autumn when the leaves turn colour and ‘fall’. Nearby is Bear Mountain state park a favourite refuge for nature lovers with hiking, fishing, skiing and ice-skating.

In the heat of the summer the Jersey Shore has to be visited. The coast stretches 127 miles and is a popular tourist destination. Along the coast Belmar has a reputation as a real party town. Spring lake and Bay Head are two other noteworthy stops. If you fancy doing some gambling, check out Atlantic city, further a field, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US. The town itself hasn’t much to offer though and its definitely not Vegas!
