Stunning Highclere Castle is easily the most recognizable attraction, with its proud defensive structures and entrancing ornate rooms. Little expense has been spared in the castle’s upkeep, making it one of the best preserved of its kind in England.
The enthralling Egyptian Exhibition is the legacy of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who, along with Howard Carter, discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb. Once you’ve been entranced by the castle, take time to stroll through the acres of spectacular gardens. Nearby, you’ll find the famous Newbury racecourse, and the Kennet and Avon Canal.
Newbury is a pleasant town to wander around, with plenty of old buildings mixed with the new. For more exercise, try one of the historic walks that tour the battlefields near the town. These are where King Charles I suffered two crucial defeats at the hands of Cromwell in 1643 and 1644; informative maps provided by the tourist office allow you to relive the battles themselves.
The town still celebrates its historic beginnings with lively markets, held every Thursday and Saturday; bargains include clothing and antiques. Newbury has plenty of quality restaurants, and after dark entertainment is provided by several traditional pubs and tasteful bars. Entertainment of a different nature is provided by the excitement of the races at Newbury racecourse.
There are numerous options for daytrips from Newbury. Just a short distance away is Marlborough, featuring plenty of interesting historic architecture, and Whitchurch, a charming country village. Farther away are the renowned dreaming spires of the ancient University of Oxford.
By car, leave the M4 at junction 13 and take the A34 to Newbury; from the M3 leave at junction 9. There are frequent Thames Trains services to and from London Paddington, via Reading, taking about one hour.
