Car Hire Newark - Mini guide to Newark
Despite living in the shadow of its more famous Big Apple neighbour, Newark is New Jersey's largest urban center and America's third oldest major city. It has a lot to offer for both the business and holiday traveller.
The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart - the fifth largest cathedral in North America, with spires higher than those of Notre Dame or Westminster Abbey is probably Newarks finest building. Also in the city centre is Washington Park, established as a marketplace in 1669, which contains statues of George Washington and Christopher Columbus. Nearby the former Mutual Benefit Life Building is one of the most architecturally significant structures in New Jersey. On the southwest corner of the park is the Newark Museum - highlights include the largest collection of Tibetan art outside Tibet, the Dreyfuss Planetarium, and the Ballantine House. Close to the museum is Aljira: A Centre for Contemporary Art.
In the Four Corners/Military Park district youll find the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, which has been called the nation's most glamorous theater. Just across from NJPAC is Military Park, host to the Wars of America (monument, created by Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum). At the northern end of the park is the Episcopal Trinity and St. Philip's Cathedral, originally built in 1746 and rebuilt in 1809 after being damaged during the Revolutionary War.
The major suburbs in Newark are: Clinton Hill, Dayton, Fairmount, Forest Hill, Lincoln Park, Mount Pleasant, Roseville, Seventh Avenue, The Ironbound and Vailsburg.
