Explore New England

Boston - Visit the North End where the majority of residents are Italian, and the streets are filled with lovely restaurants and coffee shops. Visit the historic building 'Quincy Market' centered in a beautiful square, lovely for relaxing and watching the world go by. Boston's richest area is Beacon Hill, and is easily distinguished from other parts of the city due to its gilt dome of the Massachusetts State House.

Connecticut - During the autumn here, the amazing Litchfield Hills explode with the colour of the changing leaves. A great way to experience the area is to take Route 7, which runs north to south through the northwest corner of the state and along the shore of the lovely Housatonic River.

Hartford - Connecticut’s capital, and its largest city. Hartford, originally settled as a trading post in 1633, is Connecticut’s capital and its largest city. This city has been around long enough to see some big changes. Today Hartford is a thriving city, while retaining its old-fashioned New England charm.

Maine - The largest city here is Portland, which is located on a beautiful peninsula extending into the scenic Casco Bay. This lovely ‘burg’ is home to brick sidewalks, cobblestone streets, a wonderful lighthouse (see image above) and reputedly, some of the best food in New England. One of the best ways to enjoy Maine is to drive to one of its many seaside inns and just sit on the deck and watch the ocean. This can make a very nice break from lots of driving or city exploring.

Massachusetts - Out on Cape Cod you will find the charming little town of Chatham. This quiet resort town is classic small town America down to its shopping on Main Street. During the summer there are great sunbathing opportunities and outdoor concerts every Friday night.

New Hampshire - The two largest cities here are Manchester and the capital Concord. Concord has a good history museum and planetarium, and Manchester’s proliferation of old mills along the river is an impressive sight.

Portsmouth - This salty coastal city in New Hampshire contains a beautiful harbour as well as a fascinating compound of 42 buildings dating from 1695-1820. This wonderful little town is also home to many grand houses dating from the time of the Revolution.

Providence - Rhode Island’s capital and its largest city. It has such sites as the 1753 Atheneum Library, the 1762 General Assembly Building, the 1773 old market building, the 1755 Stephen Hopkins House and the John Brown House built in 1786.

Rhode Island - Newport is a fascinating seaside community. Originally built up as a key port of the British clipper trade, today its wonderful harbour is filled with cigarette boats, tugs, ferries and sloops. The town also has a lovely collection of preserved waterside homes, Federal houses and mansions.

Vermont - The capital of Vermont is Montpelier and its largest city is Burlington. Both are pretty towns, and both are noted for being the only American cities in recent memory to elect socialists to run their administrations. A drive along Route 100 is one of the most beautiful in America, especially during the autumn when the leaves are changing colour. This lovely wooded, hilly route is a perfect way to explore this enchanting state.

By air
New England is well served by most major American carriers. Boston’s Logan Airport is the most common and convenient location for those coming to explore the area from overseas. Other common flyways to New England are Albany, Bangor and Portland, Maine, Montreal and New York City.

By car
Take the I-95 highway to Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island if you wish to see more of what New England has to offer. The best way to get around if you have several stops on your itinerary is to book car hire before you travel. The roads are well signposted and easy to drive so you can also enjoy the scenery whilst cruising along the interstate highways. The easiest approach to northern New England from southern New England is along I-91, I-93 and I-95 highways.
