Car Hire in New England - Getting to New England
New England is well served by most major American carriers. Bostons Logan Airport is the most common and convenient location for those coming to explore the area from overseas. Other common flyways to New England are New York City, Montreal, Hartford, Conn., Burlington, Vt., Bangor and Portland, Maine and Albany, N.Y.
From the south, I-95 is the major interstate highway serving Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine. The least stressful route (with fewer tractor-trailers) from New York to Boston is via Hartford, Conn., using I-84 and the Massachusetts Turnpike. The easiest approach to northern New England from southern New England is along one of the three main interstate highway corridors. I-91 heads more or less due north from Hartford along the Vermont-New Hampshire border, then angles through northern Vermont. I-93 departs from I-95 near Boston, and then cuts through New Hampshire to connect with I-91 near St. Johnsbury, Vt. For Maine, take I-95 north; it parallels the southern Maine coast before veering inland.
Amtrak offers direct service between Boston and Washington DC with major stops New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore on the way. The railway extensively serves southern New England, while the less populated northern area has fewer options.
