New England is without a doubt one of the most popular places in America for a road trip. Here rugged natural beauty abounds and quaint pretty little towns are commonplace. It is truly a lovely region for a drive.

Out on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, you will find the charming little town of Chatham. This quiet resort town is classic small town America down to its shopping on Main Street. During the summer there are great sunbathing opportunities and outdoor concerts every Friday night.

In Connecticut during the autumn, the amazing Litchfield Hills explode with the colour of the changing leaves. A great way to experience the area is to take Route 7, which runs north to south through the northwest corner of the state and along the shore of the lovely Housatonic River.

Newport, Rhode Island, is a fascinating seaside community. Originally built up as a key port of the British clipper trade, today its wonderful harbour is filled with cigarette boats, tugs, ferries and sloops. The town also has a lovely collection of preserved waterside homes, Federal houses and mansions.

The salty coastal city of Portsmouth New Hampshire contains a beautiful harbour as well as a fascinating compound of 42 buildings dating from 1695-1820. This wonderful little town is also home to many grand houses dating from the time of the Revolution.

A drive along Route 100 in Vermont is one of the most beautiful in America, especially during the autumn when the leaves are changing colour. This lovely wooded, hilly route is a perfect way to explore this enchanting state.

One of the best ways to enjoy Maine is to drive to one of its many seaside inns and just sit on the deck and watch the ocean. This can make a very nice break from lots of driving or city exploring.
