Rent a Car Netherlands - Geography Netherlands
If youre looking for mountains or undulating landscape, youre not likely to find it in this country, half of which should belong to the North sea. The Dutch mountains are almost hills, the rest of the country is made of flat reclaimed land, protected from the ever threatening sea by endless dykes. Not surprisingly its an ideal country for cycling. Its limited size and lack of firm ground doesnt leave much natural wilderness to explore, and the North west is heavily built up and populated, while Zeeland in the north is largely made up of water.
Holland is a region that makes up the north of the country (but often incorrectly used to refer to the country as a whole) is a partly reclaimed from the waters of the North Sea, and more than half of it lies at or below sea level. It has flat, fertile landscapes and mile upon mile of grassy dunes, backing onto stretches of pristine sandy beach.
Only in the south-east Limburg province will you find hills. The Netherlands is bordered by the North Sea, Belgium and Germany. The Rhine, being the only proper river, drains the run-off from the mountains in Germany and Switzerland. There is little natural wilderness due to the large population, with the west being the most densely populated area including Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Moving outside this area does not provide many isolated areas with towns blurring into each other. However, flat, muddy fields and small woodlands do act as buffers.
