Mini guide to Nazareth
Nazareth of the Annunciation is the largest Arab city in Israel. Equally divided between Arab Muslims and Christians, this city in the heart of the Jewish State befits its importance as one of the most important Christian holy sites in the world. Much of Jesus Christs adult life was spent in and around Nazareth and the city has largely escaped Israels violence.
The Basilica of the Annunciation is an imposing two-story church. Built over the earlier Byzantine and Crusader church, it marks the traditional Roman Catholic site of the Annunciation. The interior enshrines the sunken Grotto of the Annunciation, the supposed remains of the 1st century home of Mary.
The city contains numerous sites of interest including the Church of St. Josephs Carpentry, near the Basilica of the Annunciation, which marks the traditional site of the workshop of Joseph. Also nearby is the Sisters of the Nazareth Convent, which contains excavations of the 1st Century Tomb of Herod.
Though most people come to Nazareth for its religious significance, this is also a modern Arab city with other attractions. If you get the chance, go to the traditional Old Market in the city center and try your hand at bargaining for local goods. The city also contains many decent hotels and restaurants.
Because Israel is such a small country, there are many other places nearby that are easily accessible by car. These include Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and of course Israels laid back Mediterranean beaches.
The airport in Tel Aviv offers daily flights to many cities in Europe and other countries as well. Jerusalem, which is nearer, also receives numerous international flights. To get to Nazareth you can rent a car or hire a taxi to drive you.
