Exploring Naples
The coastline south of Naples is among the most spectacular anywhere. To really appreciate the breathtaking scenery of the Almalfi coast a car is definitely necessary.
The towns of Sorrento and Positano cling to the mountainside, along which winds 50kms of zigzagging road offering stunning vistas of clear blue sea and picture-postcard villages.
A day-trip to Capri reveals a beautfiul island of legend, where one can stroll through the narrow colour-filled streets. Further south, along the coast, the port of Salerno gives access to the Hellenistic site of Paestum and, just beyond it the uncrowded coastline of the Cilento.
Also easily accessible from Naples is the once thriving, now infamous, resort town of Pompeii, which was buried under ash and mud during a devastating eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD. The well-preserved state of the ruins gives an amazing insight into Roman life of ancient times. One can even climb to the rim of the crater of Vesuvius, now lying dormant.
In contrast, inland Campania is a much poorer and less known region. The nearby towns of Cápua and Caserta are pleasant and can easily be seen on day-trips; as can Benevento, one of the stops on the old Roman route to Bríndisi.
