The attractive vacation island of Nantucket, just off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a place filled with 19th buildings, beautiful streets and many opportunities for outdoor adventure. Through the day you can spend your time down at the beach, and by night you can sample the rambunctious nightlife.
The island’s only town goes by the same name. In the town of Nantucket, you’ll find the Whaling Museum; once a whale wax factory, it now is an informative and interesting house of whaling facts. The 1926 solid-mahogany catboat, the Christina, provides daily tours of the harbour and is the perfect place to relax.
At the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge you can see egrets, terns, oystercatchers and the Great Point Lighthouse. Additionally, outdoors enthusiasts flock to Nantucket for its many adventure activities, including: body-boarding, bicycling, and windsurfing. Those without sporting propensities can head to the beach, or alternatively spend their time in one of the loud, chaotic pubs.
Situated to the west of Nantucket is Cape Cod. With its beaches, sand dunes, pleasant hills, marshes, freshwater ponds and lakes, the town is a great place to visit. Martha’s Vineyard, also nearby, offers many opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing and sunbathing.
By air, Delta Connection offers flights from Boston and New York; Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines has flights from Hyannis, Boston, Martha’s Vineyard and New Bedford; Continental Express flies from Newark; Island Airlines has services from Hyannis; and US Airways Express will get you here from Boston and New York. There are no bridges to Nantucket Island, so if you wish to bring your car, you will have to come over by ferry.
