Exploring Nantes
Situated 382kms west of Paris, Nantes is Brittany's largest town. It is a busy port with a lively student population that makes it an enjoyable stop-off when exploring the vast countryside of Brittany. Built on the largest of three islands in the Loire, the citys most illustrious edifice is the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, which dominates the wide boulevard quai de la Fosse.
Brittany has, in recent years, become a thriving resort region, with hordes of visitors enjoying the respite of beach life. Dinard probably attracts the greatest number of tourists, although the water here is known to be extremely turbulent at times.
Situated 78kms northwest of Nantes, the town of Le Baule boasts some luxurious accommodation. With its warm waters and sandy beaches, the resort has been compared to Biarritz, although most visitors frequenting Le Baule tend to be French. Here youll find every conceivable activity, from water sports to gambling in the towns casino.
Two main boulevards run parallel through the long, narrow town; the one closer to the ocean changes its name six times and, at its most famous point, it's called boulevard de l'Océan. Most of the beaches here provide good facilities and pleasant swimming opportunities in a tranquil atmosphere.
Brittanys interior is full of charming hamlets, farmhouses and moors resplendent with colourful heather. Wherever you go youll be sure to meet with an array of interesting sights. Travelling down the coastal roads, youll see sheep languorously grazing in the lush meadows.
