Nakashibetsu is a town of nearly 25,000 people a medium-sized town in rural Japan. It lies in the Shigetsu District of the Nemuro Province in the Prefecture of Hokkaido. Nakashibetsu is one of the northern most and easternmost towns in Japan, lying, as it does on the east coast of Hokkaido.

Nakashibetsu got it start in 1946 when it split off from Shibetsu Village. It became a town in 1950 as the population of the area grew. In 1955, part of nearby Betsukai Village in Notsuke District became incorportated in Nakashibetsu Town.

Nearby Nakashibetsu Airport is the easternmost airport in Japan. It is serviced by All Nippon Airlines. It is at the airport where you will have the best possibility of hiring a car. Although the Kushiro-Abashiri train line that provides access to the rest of Hokkaido is close, it does not stop in Nakashibetsu and you will have to drive to get there.

The Nakashibetsu area is a green and lush area with well-maintained roads. It is known for its moderate summers, when travelers from other parts of Japan come for the pleasant camping and the hot springs. It is pleasant throughout the summer because of relatively low humidity, and the absence of the strong summer rains that rest of Japan has to deal with.

In the winter Nakashibetsu is cold and windy, but winter temperatures don't drop much below -12 degrees Celsius because it is so near the ocean. Instead of constant light snowfall, Hokkaido gets intermittent snowfall that produces lots of snow that stays on the ground. Because of the relative dryness of the air, you'll find snow in the nearby mountains perfect and powdery, suitable for days of fantastic skiing.
