Nagasaki Airport is an international airport offering connections to Korean and China, as well as other parts of Japan, through six carriers, two of them international: China Eastern Airlines, and Korean Air. Nagasaki Airport is the world's first offshore airport and it is built on a landfill. It is connected to the mainland by bus or ship, but, of course, your best bet for getting around is to hire a car. Aside from gas and your rental fees, driving a car won't cost you much and will get you places faster.

If you do hire a car, trips to local areas are fairly short. A journey to Isahaya will take you 25 minutes, and one to Shimabara will take you 90 minutes. Nagasaki itself is a 40 to 60 minutes drive.

Bus trips are provided by several bus lines: Nagasaki Ken-ei Bus, Nagasaki Bus, Shimatetsu Bus and Saihi Bus. Travel times vary, of course, depending on your destination, and so do fares. You can expect fares in the 600 to 1700 yen range, and service for most lines can be as frequent as once every fifteen minutes or as infrequent as one bus per hour. Be aware that bus service to Isahaya is the most expensive and least frequent. Also, keep in mind that the less busy routes end service early and none of the lines run very late by western standards.
