Car Hire in Murcia - Getting to Murcia
Murcias San Javier Airport is located about 35 miles from the city but offers mainly domestic flights and has fewer international connections than Alicante, which is only 45 minutes away from Murcia by car. Alicantes El Altet airport has many international and domestic flights connecting to all major Spanish and European destinations by both scheduled and charter services.
From El Altet airport the two best options to reach Murcia are by taxi or renting a car. Bus and train options from the airport are slow and generally require going into Alicante city first. If you are driving from Alicante airport on the highway it is approximately 40 miles to Murcia.
Murcias central train station is Murcia-El Carmen. Four or five trains connect Murcia and Madrid daily and the trip takes around 5 hours. Murcia is also well connected by train with the major cities along the Mediterranean coast, such as Barcelona and Valencia.
There are a number of bus services, both local and long-haul operating from Murcia but unfortunately they are not renowned for their reliability. Information about available services can be found at most local travel agents.
Express way A7 connects Murcia to all the Mediterranean cities (Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante), and the major Andalusian cities (Granada, Málaga, Sevilla) lie along express way A92. In addition, Murcia is connected through the net of national roads to Madrid and many other Spanish cities (road N-301 to Madrid which is now mostly an express way). Murcia is located 400 km south-east of the capital.
