Car Hire Mudgee - Mini guide to Mudgee
A town of scarcely 10,000 citizens, Mudgee in central New South Wales, is located 130 km northwest of Sydney. The broad fertile plane is famous for the fine wine produced in the region, which features more than 40 wineries. Other produce includes sheep, wheat, olives, tomatoes, corn and cattle.
A century ago, gold mining was big in the area, and coal mines are still in operation. The rich history and the wineries attract a fair number of visitors and puts them up in style at the many and varied bed and breakfasts and restaurants.
History
The colorful name for this town is derived from Moothi, a Wiradjuri term meaning .Nest in the Hills.. The town grew up early, with a rough and ready beginning about 1821. Major conflicts with the native Wiradjuri over the killing of native livestock such as possums and kangaroos, food sources of the Wiradjuri, lead to Martial Law in 1824, and a police station and jail were part of the early landscape.
The tiny village of Mudgee in 1851 held a mere 200 souls, but when gold was discovered nearby in Hargraves, the New South Wales gold rush ensued, and the population exploded to 20,000
