The local airport, Montpellier Mediterranean International, receives domestic flights daily from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, as well as flights from a number of international cities. The airport is located eight kilometres southeast of Montpellier, and transport is provided from the airport by both bus and tramway.
If you are travelling by road from the UK, you will need to transport your vehicle across the English Channel by loading your car on to trains using the Channel Tunnel, or on to ferries plying the sea route.
From other parts of Europe, Montpellier can be easily accessed by road. From Spain, access to the city is gained using motorway A9; from Italy travel via the A8-A9; from Northern Europe and Paris take the A7-A9; and from central France use the A75.
Train networks in France are extensive, reliable and cost-effective, and Montpellier can be reached by train from all parts of France and many cities in the rest of Europe. The rail journey between Montpellier and Brussels takes five hours. From the UK, trains use the Channel Tunnel before reaching France. From Gare St Lyon in Paris, 11 high-speed TGV trains leave for Montpellier each day. There is also an overnight TGV service which takes slightly longer.
The French bus system connects all parts of France and extends to many other parts of Europe. Eurolines, Linebus and Iberbus are a few of the bus services which connect directly to Barcelona, Madrid, Marrakech, Rome, Venice, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Prague and Belgrade. For most other European cities, it is necessary to get connecting buses from Paris.
Ferries run on a regular basis, all year round, between ports in Britain and several ports in Normandy, France. They are one of the cheapest forms of transport, if not the most comfortable. Visitors can continue their journey by road or rail after reaching the port of arrival.
