Car Rental Montgomery - Exploring Montgomery
There are many attractions on the fringes of Montgomery which are best explored by car, especially in the summer when temperatures can make exploring on foot uncomfortable.
The states Black Heritage Trail includes the cities of Saint Jude, Selma (west of Montgomery) and Tuskegee (to the east). Selma is the site of the famous Martin Luther King Jr Walking Tour and Monument. Tuskegee is noted for its university and the Booker T Washington Gravesite.
The Hank Williams Museum, to the north of the city, displays artefacts from the life, career, family and friends of a true legend in the world of country music. Among other Williams' mementoes, the museum features the 1952 Cadillac he rode on his final journey.
The historic Oakwood Cemetery Annex dates back to the early 1800s and is the burial site for many of Alabama's forefathers. Look for the monument featuring a white, stone-carved cowboy hat that marks the grave of Hank Williams.
The nearby Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum is a delight for strolling. Olympic and Greek themes dominate this attraction, known as Alabama's Little Corner of Greece. Over eight hectares of gardens and sculptures, memorabilia from past Olympic Games, a full-scale replica of the Temple of Hera ruins and the birthplace of the Olympic Flame are highlights.
Also to the north of the city, the 67-hectare Fort Toulouse/Jackson Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and features nature trails and excellent camping facilities. Also of interest are the French Colonial Fort, the William Bartram Arboretum, an Indian mound, and several other historic buildings.
Montgomery Zoo is unique in that it is North America's only zoo that features coyotes and bears together in a natural setting. Additionally, there are over 800 animals here, including a family of chimps. There are also some barrier-free exhibits, allowing animals to move freely and interact with visitors. The giant walk-through exotic bird cage should not be missed.
For the golfer, Montgomery is home to the famed Lagoon Park, reputed to be one of the countrys best courses.
