Mini guide to Monterrey
Monterrey, in central Mexico, is one of the countrys most vibrant and exciting cities. Surrounded by the picturesque Sierra Madre Mountains, this Mexican center for business and manufacturing is also a haven for the arts and those seeking a rugged eco-tourist adventure.
Dominating the skyline around the city, towering over even the other Sierra Madres is the Cerro de la Silla, (Saddle Mountain). This mountain, now the symbol of the city, is climbable, but the less experienced would prefer the numerous trails at the base of the mountain.
As a center for Mexican Art, this city boasts several good art museums and many galleries. The Museo de Monterrey houses works by such Mexican greats as Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo. The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo is dedicated to the Mexican modernist movement.
If you are interested in fine cuisine both the Restaurant Luisiana and the Plaza Hidalgo are extremely popular with the local elite, (but are still reasonably priced.) The city also offers a range of hotels to fit all budgets.
The area around Monterrey is where the real action is for eco-tourism enthusiasts. If you rent a car you can try rock climbing at nearby Canon de Huasteca, the Parque Ecologico Chipinque or the Canon de Potrero Chico. Chipinque also offers trekking, biking and horseback riding, all in this beautiful mountain highland.
The international airport in Monterrey has flights to and from cities in Mexico, the US, and around Central America and the Caribbean.
