For a break from the bustle of the city, Orange Beach is within easy driving distance of Mobile, and is famed for its clear warm waters, soft white sand, and spectacular views of the Gulf. Popular spots at Orange Beach are Perdido Point and Cotton Bayou, both of which offer public access and parking. Perdido Point also features a boardwalk that is terrific for romantic walks at dusk.

One of southern Alabama's more popular getaway spots, Gulf Shores offers several opportunities to enjoy its attractive shoreline. There are numerous access points to Gulf Shores Public Beach, which offers changing facilities, a boardwalk, open-air pavilions and picnic areas. The calm, shallow waters of nearby Lagoon Park offer excellent swimming.

Originally settled in the late 17th century by the Spaniards, who were attracted by its strategic location at the mouth of Mobile Bay and to its natural beauty, Dauphin Island played a key role in the Civil War. Today, the island attracts tourists with its warm waters, 24-hectare bird sanctuary and impressive Dauphin Island Sea Lab, and Estuarium. This public aquarium recreates the four main ecosystems of the Mobile estuary system.

The beautiful Mirror Lake estate of the Bellingrath Gardens and Home is set in 25 hectares of immaculately manicured gardens which boast beautiful exotic plants and flowers.

The lovely 15-room mansion is furnished with antiques and personal effects, including the Bellingraths’ fine china and porcelain collections. Those looking for romance should take the 45-minute tour of the Fowl River aboard the Southern Belle; views from the water are unparalleled.

The antebellum Bragg Mitchell mansion is one of Mobile's most beautiful examples of 19th century Classical Revival architecture; its grand white façade is nestled among towering oak trees off Springhill Avenue. The mansion is one of the most popular tourist attractions in town and is open for tours and regular Murder Mystery Dinners.

Many water sports opportunities are available around Mobile, including sailing, rafting, canoeing, kayaking and jet-skiing. Additionally, there is excellent fishing along with high ranked golf courses.
