Car Hire in Milwaukee - Getting to Milwaukee
Located in the southeastern corner of the state of Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is well served by air, road and rail.
Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport, 10kms south of downtown, is served by several domestic and international carriers. Flying time is four hours from New York, and nine hours from London. Nearby Madison Airport also receives direct flights from Canada. Other nearby regional airports make flying an attractive option.
To reach the city from Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport, the Milwaukee County Transit System operates buses costing US$1.35 to the city centre. By car, take I-94 north. Taxis between the airport and downtown take about 20 minutes, with fares in the region of US$20.
From the north, I-43 provides controlled access into downtown Milwaukee. I-94 leads to downtown from Chicago and other points south and west of the city. If you are travelling to sites in the wider metropolitan area, from I-94 you can connect to I-894, which bypasses central Milwaukee.
Amtrak trains go from Milwaukee to Chicago in Illinois and St Paul in Minnesota daily. From St Paul, trains run on to the west, and from Chicago, trains run to most cities in the south and east.
A cheaper option is Greyhound Lines buses which run to and from cities throughout the state, with connections farther afield.
