Getting to Milan
Milan is one of the most convenient destinations to get to in Italy, at a crossroads for air, road and rail. Nearby Genoa also makes boat arrival feasible.
Malpensa international airport handles almost all international flights, and is a popular stopover en-route to the Middle East and Asia, but it's about 50km northwest of the city. Most domestic and some European flights use Linate airport (7kms from city center). The transportation network from both is frequent and reliable.
Buses arrive directly from many European cities, via a spectacular drive through the Alps. The main points of entry are the Mont Blanc tunnel from France at Chamonix, the Grand St Bernard tunnel from Switzerland and the Brenner Pass from Austria. From the west there is also an easy route to Nice and the Cote dAzure. However bus stations are scattered across town, confusing foreign travellers.
Trains are a comfortable option, arriving from Switzerland and France, and continuing south to the rest of the country. The rail network in Italy is punctual, well organized, fast and relatively cheap, making it a preferable means of getting to Genoa, Trieste, Venice, Florence and other nearby destinations. They depart from Stazione Central, but there are two other stations, Nord and Porte Garibaldi.
Many of Italy's main motorways converge at Milan's busy ring road, known as the Tangenziale Est and Tangenziale Ovest. The busy A4 runs east and west and is the main artery out of Milan.
