Car Hire Middlesbrough - Mini guide to Middlesbrough

Located on the mouth of the Tees River in the heart of northeast England, Middlesbrough is a perfect base for exploring the spectacular Northumbria, Yorkshire and Humberside regions. The town itself has plenty to offer, from historic architecture to pleasant open spaces, and there are several first rate national parks within short driving distance.

A stunning place from which to observe the town and surrounding countryside is the conical tower of Roseberry Topping, also known as the Miniature Matterhorn. From its peak, the views over the Cleveland Hills and across Teesside to the North Sea are simply magnificent. Historically, the hilltop was used as a beacon station at the time of the Spanish Armada and during the Napoleonic Wars.

Middlesbrough is ideal for exploring on foot and has several attractions within easy access of the town centre. Captain Cook’s Birthplace Museum in Marton showcases the life and voyages of the 18th century explorer Captain James Cook, while the Dorman Museum has exhibits of a more modern nature.

Middlesbrough Town Hall is an historic Victorian building that was inaugurated by King Edward VII in 1898. For a breath of fresh air, head for the famous Transporter Bridge, an engineering marvel, or Albert Park, featuring 100 acres of family fun and attractions.

Traditional shopping opportunities are afforded by stores along the Linthorpe Road and the North Ormesby Market. Restaurants and cafés are renowned in Middlesbrough, with every culinary experience catered for. The quality and variety of the nightlife is also a famous aspect of the city.

Middlesbrough boasts a superb and varied countryside and coastal geography. The Tees Valley lies between Durham County and rural North Yorkshire and is remarkably rich in wildlife, from the seals and birdlife of the estuary and coast, to the woodlands, meadows and moor land beyond the towns and cities. Similarly, the North York Moors boasts a great variety of landscapes, including woods, sandstone towns, streams, farmland and the coast.

By car, Middlesbrough can be reached via the intersection of the A19 and the A66. The city is located about an hour by car from Tyneside, Wearside and York. It is serviced by most of the long distance train operators and is a key point on the National Express coach network. Teeside International Airport is a half-hour drive from Middlesbrough.
