About 20 km south of the downtown city lies Xochimilco, known for its networks of canals lined by beautiful gardens and agricultural plots. Hundreds of trajineras (gondolas) cruise down the canals with parties on board singing along with the waterborne bands, creating a fiesta atmosphere. Just 50 km north of Mexico City lies the archeological zone of Teotihuacan. This is known as the place of the gods being a ceremonial centre and one of the largest cities of the pre-industrial world. It includes three main sites, namely the Ciudadela, Piramide del Sol and the Piramide de la Luna which are all connected by the Calzada de los Muertos.
Tlatelolco The Plaza of Three Cultures is a fascinating area to visit being the land where hundreds of protestors were massacred by government troops in 1968. Here you can view the main pyramid temple and other Aztec buildings. The Spanish monastery, Templo de Santiago, is situated here with the monument outside dedicated to the victims of the 1968 massacre.
The Basilica de Guadalupe is the site where Mexicos patron saint, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, was first seen in a vision in 1531. She is famous for performing miracles and her image dominates shrines all over the city with the most revered being the Cerro del Tepeyac.
