The traditional fishing village of Fornells makes an interesting contrast with its neighbour from the western side of the peninsula, Playas de Fornells, with its reputation as a new resort development. So far the package tour operators have not paid the resort nor the village much attention.

Fornells is situated about 20 miles north of the International Airport, a journey which should take about 45 minutes. Travellers with children young enough to require a car seat are advised to pre-book a hire car or a taxi specifying that a car seat is required.

The village overlooks the breathtaking Bay of Fornelles on the eastern side of the peninsula. Because Playas de Fornelles looks out onto the Bay of Cala Tirant it is known by the locals as Tirant Playa. This can cause some confusion when asking directions.

The port is just a short journey from the resort of Son Parc where the only golf course on the island is situated. The course, designed by the architect of the Belfry course in England, is set in beautiful countryside and is bordered by a Wetlands Nature Reserve.

Tempting though it is to spend the whole holiday on the beach or in the water, the colourful markets which are held in the mornings three times a week in nearby Es Mercadal are worth a visit. Es Mercadal is just a short drive from Fornells and has a bank and a range of shops. Its annual fiesta is held on the 3rd or 4th week-end in July.

Fornells was protected in the 17th century by the Castell de Sant Antoni, an imposing structure which was mostly destroyed in the 19th century. Evidence of British occupancy of Menorca can be found nearby at the Torres de Fornells.
