Car Hire Menorca
Mini guide to Menorca
Menorca is a charming, quieter alternative to the tourist hustle and bustle other Balearic islands, with lovely beaches, inlets and stunning coastal views. The island has been inhabited for almost 3000 years successively by the Carthaginian, Romans, Greeks, Moors, Spanish, English and French.
Mahon is a maze of narrow streets built around one of the world's largest natural harbours.
There are many historical buildings, the oldest being the Arch de San Roque - remains of the old city wall. The 17th century Town Hall and 18th century Church of Santa Maria are on the old town square. Behind this is the Plaza de la Conquesta, featuring a monument commemorating the islands liberator, King Alfonso III. Castell de Santa Agueda, just a few kilometres away, is the elevated ruin of a former Roman stronghold.
Ciutadella is the spiritual home and former capital, with a distinctly Moorish character and an attractive port surrounded by narrow, arcaded streets. Plaza de's Born (main square), with its ancient town hall and Palace Torre Saura, has postcard perfect views of the harbour. The Cathedral in the Plaza de Pio XII, completed in 1362, took over 50 years to build. Without doubt, the best way to see Ciutadella is by foot.
By car you can explore the coastline, many lovely beaches and Mount Toro.
