Car Hire in Memphis - Getting to Memphis
Memphis is located in the extreme south western corner of Tennessee and has an international airport nearby, good road access and a limited rail service.
Memphis International Airport, southeast of downtown, is served by most major airlines and is a hub for Northwest Airlines. There are flights arriving from most US cities as well as onward international connections. New York is a 2 hour, 30 minute journey away; while the flight from London takes 10 hours.
Driving time to downtown from the airport is about 15 minutes along I-240 northwest. Taxis are available for the trip into town and cost around US20.
By car, you can access Memphis via the north-south I-55 or the east-west I-40; while I-240 loops around the city. Interstate 55 leads north to St. Louis and south to Jackson, Mississippi; I-40 goes east to Nashville and Knoxville.
Amtrak provides limited services to Memphis via the City of New Orleans line, which stops in Memphis on the trip between New Orleans and Chicago.
Greyhound coaches provide services into the Memphis area and Tennessee from nationwide destinations.
Memphis is one of the stops on the paddle-wheeler cruises of the Delta Queen Steamboat Company. The Delta Queen, the Mississippi Queen and the American Queen travel between St Louis and New Orleans.
