Memmingen

Memmingen is a town located in the German state of Bavaria, in the Swabia region. It is situated on the river Iller, on the border to Baden-Württemburg. This medieval town survived both World Wars, and the refurbishment that has ruined many other old German towns. It retains its old-world charm, with many buildings relatively unchanged from the day they were first built.

The Stadtbach, or Town River, is a beautiful site, with the river flowing between buildings and traversed periodically by little old wooden bridges. Many parts of the old city walls are still in existence (about two kilometers, in fact), as is the West Gate (one of nine gates and towers still visible). The market place and town hall are as they were back in their day, and boast Renaissance splendor and beauty.

The settlement of Memmingen dates back to Roman times, with a Roman military camp on the site of the present-day town. Then, in the 400s, the Alemanics settled and later in the 600s, a Frankish castle was built on the site. In ancient times two major roads ran through Memmingen – the Italian road from northern Germany to Italy and Switzerland.

The second was the Roman road, the Salt Road, to Lindau and Bohemia, Austria and Munich. Both roads help establish Memmingen as a main trading town. In the Middle Ages Memmingen was known as Mammingin, and in 1158 Duke Welf VI founded the town Memmingen.

In 1286 it became an Imperial City, responsible only to the Kaiser.Memmingen played an important part in the Peasant War and the 30 Years’ War, with peasants being drawn to Memmingen by preacher Christoph Schappeler’s support of peasant rights.

Schappeler preached in Memmingen’s Saint Martin’s church in the 1500s. The remains of the Roman military settlement can be found at Saint Martin’s. The church itself is now a tourist destination, with its Gothic design and choir.
