Meiningen

Meiningen is a town in the German state of Thuringia, in the district of Schmalkalden- Meiningen. The town is located on the River Werra, which is a source of the River Weser, and was first mentioned in the year 982, although it was chartered in 1344.

It was settled by Celts in the Bronze Age, and later the Germanic peoples. In 1003 the present day church began construction, and soon after the old town moved to be closer to the new church. At that time, the residents were mainly farmers and craftsmen. In 1153 the town obtained city rights, and in the 14th century were built large double walls and about 30 towers, two gates and three ditches.

Between 1680 and 1918 Meiningen was part of Saxon-Meiningen, and the princess of Saxon-Meiningen was Adelheid Louise Theresa Caroline Amelia von Sachsen-Meiningen; her name is kept alive today in the Australian capital city of Adelaide. She was the wife of English King William IV.

Meiningen has a theatre, the Meininger (founded in 1831), and in its time it had a huge affected theatrical life in Europe and Germany. George II of Saxony-Meiningen was very active in the theatre and drew much attention to the Meininger. Nowadays the theatre is known as Südthüringisches Staatstheater (South Thuringia State Theatre), and is the employer of over 300 people.

Each year the theatre holds a ball, the highlight of the theatrical calendar, and many more events are scheduled throughout the year – over 1000, in fact! However, if you don’t have the opportunity to see a show at the Meininger, then the theatre itself is a tourist destination. Make sure you stop by!

Meiningen is considered to be the cultural, judicial and financial center of Thuringia. Its major industries are tourism, high-tech, machinery, metal and foods.
