Mini guide to Mazatlan
Mazatlan is a popular and well-loved resort that has avoided the tackiness which has afflicted many Mexican seaside towns. Its pristine beaches, sumptuous seafood and attractive accommodation draw many visitors. Lively nightspots and colonial buildings add to the appeal.
The Plaza Principal forms the citys centre. This main square is thronged with tourists who come to browse the food and handicraft vendors stalls. They also come to see the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception which was built in the early 19th century. It is famous for its twin yellow-tiled steeples.
Another architectural gem is the beautiful Teatro Angela Peralta. Noted throughout Mexico, it was established in 1874 and can house over 800 people to witness performances of opera, jazz, classical music concerts and ballet. The historic district fans out from the theatre, with the Plazuela Machado containing most of the historically and aesthetically pleasing edifices.
Non-history related sites include the impressive aquarium. One of the biggest and best-kept in Mexico, it contains over 200 species of fish and features large sharks, crocodiles and playful sea lions. The archeological museum contains many artifacts from pre-Columbian Mexico and also has a permanent art exhibition.
More strenuous activities are centred on the fine beaches. Playa Las Gaviotas and Playa Sabalo are the most popular spots for renting water sports equipment like snorkels and fishing rods. To experience some of the best surf in Mexico, head over to Los Pinos and Playa Los Sabalos beaches, where tanned surfers hang out and where you can charter boats to go deep sea fishing.
Away from the sands, Mazatlan is blessed with many golf courses, plus hiking and horse trails.
