Car Rental Maui - Exploring Maui
Hiring a car on Maui is a must, its a fantastic wilderness with so much to see!
Start out with the famous Hana Highway, on the northeastern coast of Maui between Kailua and Hana, it ranks as the most spectacular coastal drive in Hawaii. A cliff-hugger, it winds its way deep into lush valleys and back out above the rugged coastline. Along the way, Waianapanapa State Park has cabins and camping and numerous lovely waterfalls.
Haleakala Crater is the world's largest dormant volcano at 7.5mi long and 2.5mi wide, and the Haleakala National Park is centered around the crater. The Leleiwi Overlook, halfway between park headquarters and the visitor center provides a fascinating phenomenon. From here you can see the West Maui Mountains and Maui's isthmus, and if you're lucky, the Brocken specter. This optical illusion takes place at high elevations - your image is magnified and projected onto the clouds by the sun, and the light reflecting off water droplets in the clouds creates a circular rainbow around your shadow. At the Kalahaku Overlook, about a mile above Leleiwi, you can look down into the crater, while at the Puu Ulaula Overlook, Maui's highest point, you can see the Big Island, Lanai, Molokai and even Oahu. Maui has plenty of fantastic nature areas to help soothe the soul, such as Clouds' Rest Protea Farm, Kula Botanical Gardens and the Enchanting Floral Gardens.
