The city is about 1 hour, 30 minutes by train from Lille and about 40 minutes from Valenciennes. Only a few miles from the Belgian border, Maubeuge also makes a good base from which to explore Mons, a magnificent city in Belgium.
Even though it shares much the same culture as Mons, Maubeuge doesn’t have the beauty that Mons beholds. Maubeuge was rebuilt after the old city was destroyed in 1940 during WWII, and many buildings were reconstructed in uncharacteristic blocks.
However, the town still has a handful of historic delights to visit. Several religious buildings offer wonderful charms of the past. Notable ones include the 15th century Chapelle des Soeurs Noires, the Art Deco styled Sthrau hall and the 16th century Cantuaines Hospice.
One of the most popular sights in Maubeuge is the remains of Vauban’s fortifications, located on the left bank. Although some parts were destroyed after WWII, the city gates still stand proudly. The western section of the fortifications is now the Maubeuge Zoo, which promises to inject some excitement into any slow-going trip.
