Matera is magnificently situated above a rocky gorge in the easterly province of Basilicata. With 55, 000 people, this historic town is in the heart of a prehistoric settlement, remains of which are featured in the National Museum.

This town features the two famous quarters of Sasso Barisano and Sassa Caveoso. Most of these “sassi” or houses are made from rocks and built in tiers on the hillside. Its interior is adjourned with a rosette in stone symbolizing the Wheel of Life. Inside, you can see the remains of a fresco of the Madonna della Bruna, the patron saint of Madera. Other old churches within the vicinity are the San Giovanni Battista constructed in 13th century, which was built in honour of St. John the Baptist and San Francesco d’ Assisi featuring stuccos, paintings and many more.

Meanwhile, small churches hewn out of the rock can also be found in the region surrounding Matera. These sites proved that long time ago, monks and sheep-rearing communities lived there.

However, the oldest and most historical site in Matera is the I Sassi. According to history, it existed long before Christ was born. Tourists are impressed by its varied frescas in the “grotte” or caves carved out of a mountain made of limestone.
