Car Hire Martha’s Vineyard - Mini guide to Martha’s Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard, an island located off the coast of Massachusetts, is known throughout the United States as a beautiful tourist hot spot. Atmospheric and historically renowned, the area has some great sights, including old lighthouses, busy fishing villages, beaches and good places to shop. It's also here where a large population of Native American Indians have resided for many years.

Edgartown boasts some attractive old sailors' homes from the 17th through 19th centuries, and there's also a gallery where you can purchase souvenirs. Visit the Native American Indian settlement of Aquinnah, which is home to the Wampanoag Tribe, and has been named a National Historic Landmark. While at the pleasant fishing village of Menemsha, you'll find a delectable assortment of seafood.

In the charming village of Oak Buffs, is one of the island's most endearing sights: a flying horse carousel that once had its home on the famous Coney Island. The carousel has since been fully restored and is the joy of the children that visit Martha's Vineyard.

Not far south of Martha's Vineyard is Nantucket Island. The island is home to the interesting Whaling Museum and an 18th century windmill. What's more fascinating about the island is the untainted natural sites, with wild cranberries, heather and wild roses spread profusely around the area.

Cape Cod, lying to the north of Martha's Vineyard, has some choice beaches, sand dunes, pleasant hills, marshes and freshwater ponds. There is a host of possibilities for outdoor adventure, including: camping, hiking and bicycling; for the more sedentary person, there are some good spots for sunbathing and picnicking.

Martha's Vineyard Airport, served by Cape Air, Continental Express and Westchester Air, is about eight kilometres outside Edgartown. The nearest major airport is Boston's Logan International, offering direct flights to and from most major American cities and cities in Europe. There are no roads directly to the island, so all cars must travel by ferry. Ferry services to the island are available from Woods Hole on Cape Cod, Falmouth, Hyannis, New Bedford and Nantucket.
