Located at the base of the spectacular Atlas range, the city’s highlight is the magnificent 12th century Koutoubia Minaret, the oldest of the legendary three great Almohad towers. Soaring nearly seventy meters above the city, the structure dominates the surrounding areas, as does the vastness of its base, covering an area five times that of its height. The ancient building is incredibly well-preserved, and features massive arched gates, intricate inlay work and three huge copper balls, the purpose of which are unknown, but are the subject of numerous superstitions and legends.

The city’s other attractions include the renowned Saadian Tombs, the vast still basins of the Agdal and Menara gardens, and the central square of Djemaa El Fna, the focal point of Marrakesh’s markets, entertainment, dining and accommodation districts.

The city has ample quality accommodation and several excellent restaurants catering to western tastes. Nightlife is centered round the main square, with many street performers contributing much to the vibrant atmosphere.

Surrounding Marrakesh is some of the most spectacular desert scenery in Morocco, while further away lies the intriguing coastal city of Safi, with its superb Medina, imposing Dar El Bahar fort and picturesque northern beaches.

Connections to Marrakesh can be made via Mohammed V International Airport, which serves regular flights to and from Europe and other world cities. Transportation links into the city are frequent and reliable.
