Mini guide to Markt Schwaben
Markt SchwabenMarkt Schwaben is a market town located in the state of Bavaria, in the district of Ebersberg. The Hennigbach River runs through the town, and into the Giggingerbach. To the east is the River Sempt.
Markt Schwaben dates back to the 11th century, with the name coming from the settlers who came from the region of Swabia. In 1340, the town of Schwaben was granted rights to hold a market by Duke Rudolf, and the name stuck. A castle was built in 1283 on the hill, as back then the border between Upper and Lower Bavaria ran to the northeast of the town. The castle was destroyed many times, until finally a castle was built in 1650 and the south wing remains today as part of the Town Hall. The old castle moat can also still be seen.
Markt Schwaben, like many other old German towns, has several churches that need to be seen before you move on in your travels. One such church dates back to the early 1300s, and another – Saint Margaret’s - in 1474. In 1674 building began on a new Saint Margaret’s, with the first set of bells consisting of three new ones and one from the old church.
Three alters have been given to the church – Mary’s Alter in 1784 (given by a lay Dominican order, ‘The Rosary Brotherhood’), in 1718 the Virgins’ Altar (with Saints Agatha, Barbara and Catharine) and then Joseph’s and Anthony’s Alters. In 1783 a brewery had a high alter installed, and in 1873 a new organ was put in. In 1911 a new set of bronze bells were given to the church, but these were seized and melted down in 1942 for the war.
There are several theatre groups that regularly hold plays and shows in town, among them an open air theatre formed in 1984, the Markt Schwaben Pond Plays. Make sure you see a play while you’re in town!
