Car Hire Marburg - Mini guide to Marburg
Marburg is nestled in the picturesque countryside of the Lahn Valley and is famous for being the place where Martin Luther preached against the doctrines of the Catholic Church.
At the top of the list of places not to be missed is Landgraves Schloss, a fort overlooking the lovely medieval old town. This is where, in 1529, Martin Luther and Zwingli conducted their debates on the foundations of religion that led to Protestantism and the split with the Catholic Church.
The golden shrine of St Elisabeth is also in Marburg and it still attracts pilgrims from across the globe. Other buildings of note include the worlds oldest Protestant University and structures originally used by the Order of Teutonic Knights.
Walking and outdoors enthusiasts should explore the lovely countryside of the Lahn valley by canoe or bicycle, or on foot. This region, which is famed for its scenic beauty, is also home to botanical gardens which offer a varied selection of flora and interesting tropical houses.
Cafés and pubs, where hearty German fare and great beer await, abound in the old towns twisting streets. Shopping runs the gamut from elegant stores to tourist stalls and second hand shops. For culture, visit the open air theatre which stages plays, classical music performances and rock concerts throughout the summer.
Take time to visit Frankfurt, one of Germanys most bustling and cosmopolitan cities. Historic sights to see here include the Goethe House, which was the birthplace of Germany's greatest writer in 1749. Also, visit the Dom, which was consecrated in 1239. This cathedral was chosen to serve as the electoral site for the kings of the Holy Roman Empire in 1356. You can spend the rest of your time wandering around the old town, which has been restored following devastating Allied bombing raids during WWII.
