A large, well-preserved town in the picturesque Durance river plain, with the Luberon to the west and the Verdon to the east, Manosque is a paragon of Roman charm. With beautiful Roman churches, lovely narrow streets and exquisite mansions dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, this enchanting town offers an exciting getaway from other touristy cities in France.
The magnificent 12th century Church of Our Lady of Romigier is located right in the heart of the city, boasting ancient Roman architectural styles. Other significant sights include the two 14th century fortified gates: the Porte de la Saunerie, built in 1382, and the Porte du Soubeyran, the highest tower in Manosque.
One of the town’s favourite sons is the famous Jean Giono, who was born and raised in Manosque. His works are showcased in Centre Giono, an impressive museum located west of the Porte de la Saunerie, in the area of his birth home.
Driving around the town, tourists will find that the buildings in Manosque are very interesting, some equipped with mysterious doorways and secret gardens. On Saturday mornings, the town is bustling with markets. There is one main market in the city centre while many narrow winding streets will also lead you to other smaller markets as well as a famous food market on the Place de la Mairie and several outdoor bookstalls.
The city offers good transportation options with a number of public buses running across Manosque. However, hiring a car is very beneficial, allowing you to explore nearby areas at your own convenience. The Luberon to the west and the Verdon to the east are worth visiting while Mont d’Or, a stunning hill a few miles from the centre of Manosque, boasts wonderful views of the countryside.
