Exploring Manchester
Just outside Manchester is Salford Quays, formerly the ship canal's docks, and it is the newest re-developed site to add a modernist face to the area with theatres, galleries and exhibition centres. The most recent addition here is The Lowry Centre, which has numerous galleries and theatrical productions for all ages.
History buffs, can step into the Quarry Bank Mill, a working 18th-century cotton mill museum in Wilmslow which is still producing cloth to this day! It is 10 miles south of the city, close to the airport.
Greater Manchester Countys urban sprawl runs for miles and for those wanting to really immerse themselves in nature a car is a must.
Cheshire, south west of Manchester, has the highest concentration of millionaires in the UK and the green and leafy suburbs here border some delightful national parks Styal Woods and Dunham Massey Reserve being two of the favourites among locals.
Not far from here is the National Trust park of Alderley Edge, a steep forested hill rising up from the otherwise flatlands of Cheshire, full of deep caves and myths. This is a place of legend and is said to house the sleeping knights of King Arthur, who will one day rise again and save the world from the forces of evil!
One of the UKs most beautiful drives lies between Manchester and nearby Sheffield, in the Peak District. It is known as the Snakes Pass, and runs around and over mountains and moors. Although the drive can easily be done in under two hours this is a perfect days outing as there are many reservoirs and country pubs to distract oneself with along the way.
