Car Hire in Malta - Getting to Malta
Most visitors to Malta arrive by air at the Malta International Airport, 5kms southwest of Valetta. There are regular flights from main European cities and additional charter flights in the summer. Air Malta also flies to Cairo, Dubai, Damascus and Tunis. Buses depart regularly from the airport to Valetta, but most opt for the convenience of taxis or shuttles to the various resorts around the island.
During summer a ferry service runs between Malta and Sicily/Genoa, taking a minimum of three hours. Car rental is a good option for getting around, buses do run but they stop in each little village and take ages. Ferries run regularly throughout the day between Cirkewwa on Malta and Mgarr on Gozo, taking about 20 minutes.
