Located approximately 100kms south of Sicily, Malta consists of three main islands.
Malta, the largest, is an elongated island indented by many bays and harbours. Mostly flat and covered in a few low lying limestone outcrops and ridges. The topsoil is unsuitable for much agriculture, but the area belowby the Dingli cliffs on the southwestern coast is lush and includes the lovely Buskett Gardens, comprising of orange groves. It laso has the only truly built up area, mostly in Valetta.
Gozo is the smaller, western, island and is greener and hillier than Malta, characterized by high rugged cliffs.
Cottonera is a tiny island between the two, largely rural with several ancient sites.
