Car Hire in Mahón - Getting to Mahón
The island of Menorca, situated off the eastern coast of Spain and northeast of Majorca, can easily be reached by air or by sea. Most visitors arrive by air, as it is the most convenient way to travel to the island. It is also possible to take a ferry from mainland Spain or from the other two major Balearic Islands, Ibiza and Majorca. Its always a good idea to reserve tickets and hotels long in advance, due to the popularity of the island.
Menorca International Airport is located three kilometres outside Mahón. It receives dozens of charter flights, mainly from Germany, Italy, the Scandinavian countries and Britain. However, if you are coming from Barcelona, Palma de Majorca or Madrid, both Iberia and Aviaco operate regularly scheduled domestic flights. There is no shuttle service from the airport into town, but taxis are available.
Buses do run to some parts of the island, with departures from Calle José Anselmo Clave in the heart of town. The most popular run is to Ciudadela, but there are connections to other parts of the island as well.
A ferry service, which runs frequently in the summer months, connects Menorca with Barcelona, Palma de Majorca and Ibiza. Journey time from Barcelona is approximately nine hours. The cabins are sometimes not too comfortable, but a self-service restaurant is available.
