Mini guide to Luedenscheid
LuedenscheidLuedenscheid is situated in the North Rhine-Westphalia district of Märkischer Kreis, in the Sauerland region. Luedenscheid is believed to have been settled sometime in the 800s, but the town was first mentioned in 1268 when it was granted town status (up from village), and it received its city rights in 1287. The first castle was built in 1114 by Emperor Henry V.
In the 1400s and 1500s, Luedenscheid was a part of the Hanseatic League. The Hanseatic League was an alliance of trading guilds between the 1200s and 1600s. The guilds held a monopoly over the Baltic Sea, and to some extent the North Sea, and the majority of Northern Europe. The foundation of the league is thought to have originated from Luebeck, in 1158.
The coat of arms of Luedenscheid contains the image of Count Medardus, Bishop of Vermandois. Medardus is looked to by people with toothache, and it is said that the weather found on his feast day (June 8) will be the weather on the following 40 days. He was the most honoured Bishop of his time, with his memory first being celebrated in France, then in Cologne, then in the west of Germany.
Below the Count on the coat is the fess (markings) of the County of Mark, an old county of the Holy Roman Empire, with the Counts of Mark being some of the most influential in the region. In fact, the name Märkischer Kreis reflects this auspicious heritage. Below this fess are the city walls, remembering the city status bestowed in 1287.
Luedenscheid is served by the B54 and B229 motorways, as well as the A45 motorway, which connects the city to all the other major cities in the Federal Republic of Germany. The A45 also joins Luedenscheid to the airports of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund and Frankfurt/Main. The fast bus and rail service also run in and out of Luedenscheid, meaning the transport system can bring the tourist or day tripper to Luedenscheid without a problem.
