Located in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein is the city of Luebeck, written in German as Lübeck. Luebeck is the second largest city in the state, and is home to one of the major German ports in the Travemünde (indeed, it is the largest German port on the Baltic Sea). Luebeck is situated on the River Trave, and the river actually makes an island of the old part of the city. The Trave is joined to the Elbe River by the Trave-Lubeck canal.

Visitors need not worry about transport, Luebeck is well serviced by the Autobahn 1 and a passenger ferry service from Travemünde. There is also a seaside resort at the Travemünde, so you needn’t go too far for a relaxing holiday – simply step off the boat! The port became popular with people leaving for the Baltic states as far back as 1200, and is now one of the 10 city zones with 15,000 residents.

UNESCO has Luebeck listed as one of their World Heritage Sites since 1987, due to the beautiful examples of gothic brickwork, and these are one of the drawcards for Luebeck – one of the two remaining town gates, the Holstentor (dating back to 1478), is still around today and brings many people to Luebeck each year. The medieval look of the town has remained too, with the town center dominated by seven old church steeples, the oldest from the 1100s. The Town Hall is yet another building that must be seen before you leave the city.

Luebeck is twinned with such cities around the world as Venice, Spokane (in Washington) and Kawasaki in Japan. And, legend has it that marzipan was first invented in Luebeck – even if this is wrong, call into one of the many marzipan factories (especially at Christmastime) and sample some of the fine produce!
