Mini guide to Ludwigsburg

Ludwigsburg

The words of Leopold Mozart to describe Ludwigsburg when he visited the town with his son Wolfgang Amadeus in July 1763 saying ""Ludwigsburg is a very special town"" still hold value today. This energetic, lively and welcoming town has many different colours to it. It is a palace town and is also the most economically prosperous region of the state. Ludwigsburg is a city in Germany, about 12 km (7 miles) north of Stuttgart's city center, near the river Neckar. It is the capital of the Ludwigsburg District with a population of 87,000 inhabitants and belongs to the Stuttgart Region in the Administrative region (Regierungsbezirk) of Stuttgart.

The factors that give the city its distinct identity are the baroque palaces, the large green parks, the Baroque-in-Bloom gardens, the famous porcelain factory, and the renowned palace festivals.

The town has 50 factories, 1200 craft-oriented and commercial companies and over 2000 wholesale and retail outlets, a teachers' training college, the University of Applied Sciences and the only film academy of the state. Ludwigsburg is indeed a centre of education.

The city originated with the thought when Ludwigsburg area was chosen in 1704 to become the royal summer residence. The plan expanded under the rule of Duke Eberhard and the whole city of Ludwigsburg was formed. The grand German baroque palace has got 452 rooms spread over 28 buildings. Thus Ludwigsburg became the city of palaces. State receptions and cultural events are still held in the palace theatre and in the assembly room of the Residential Palace till date.

In the World War II Ludwigsburg suffered reasonable destructions. It was the site of the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag V-A from October 1939 till April 1945. After the end of the war there was a large displaced persons camp that housed several thousand mainly Polish displaced persons until about 1948.

The baroque palace has various garden shows called ""Flourishing Baroque” that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The palace and its surrounding gardens appear to the public in a state very similar to their appearance around 1800. The palace theatre (Europe's oldest preserved) and its stage machinery from 1758 are still operational today.

Ludwigsburg Palace offers three museums to its visitors. The first one is the Baroque Gallery housed in the old main building that has the state gallery’s collection of Baroque paintings. These works include, in particular, paintings by German and Italian artists from the 17th an 18th centuries.

The second is the Porcelain Museum housed in the new main building. The fine Porcelain is manufactured here and has such unique pieces that are bound to make you spellbound. The third is the Baroque Fashion Museum that presents clothes from 1750 to 1820. The collection is indeed fascinating and lucidly illustrates the development of women's, men's and children's fashion over the last three hundred years.

Apart from the museums the gardens are the special attraction of the Baroque palaces. From roses to an herbal garden, form the Japanese to the award-winning Sardinian gardens the palace has it all. Moreover the flower shows and exhibits are ever-changing and always have something new to offer to its visitors. Even the little ones get enchanted in the famous fairytale garden. The garden has the fantastic magical world with more than 30 fairytale scenes.

There is also the Duke Carl Eugen apartment and Favorite the palace built between 1713 and 1723 by Duke Eberhard Ludwig for his mistress. These are definitely worth visiting.

Thus Ludwigsburg retains its tradition and has made lot of progress in the economic and commercial aspects as well. The town has various small and large companies in future-oriented industries, including a few global players thus ensuring that the future of Ludwigsburg is bright.
