Mini guide to Los Mochis
Although small, Los Mochis is a modern city located in one of the more fertile valleys of Sinaloa, Mexico. Situated near the large bay and seaport of Topolobampo, Los Mochis offers a range of accommodation, excellent restaurants serving local seafood, and modern facilities. The city is an excellent base from which to explore the famous Copper Canyon by rail.
Known for their excellent fresh water and deep sea fishing, bay tours, and either bird-watching or hunting, the Los Mochis area and El Fuerte (77kms), are popular with nature lovers and can add to the thrill of visiting the Copper Canyon.
The wide streets of Los Mochis boast many attractions. Downtown you can stroll through the thickly-forested Sinaloa Park, which contains a golf course, several hotels and excellent restaurants specialising in savoury seafood dishes.
Los Mochis is a gateway to Mexico's famous mountain adventure: Copper Canyon. The preferred way to enjoy this scenic wonderland is via the Copper Canyon Train, which departs Los Mochis twice a day for Chihuahua.
The canyon covers an area four times as large as the Grand Canyon in the US and is the result of more than 60 million years of erosion. The train ride includes 39 bridges and 87 tunnels, and at its peak reaches an altitude of 2,455m above the Sea of Cortez. Canyon elevations run as high as 2,760m above sea level, while the surrounding mountains rise to over 3,658m.
Los Mochis is 200kms from Culiacan in the State of Sinaloa and joined to it by Coastal Highway 15. Los Mochis International Airport is serviced by a number of commercial airlines. The airport is 21kms north of town. The Chihuahua al Pacífico (Copper Canyon Train) runs between Los Mochis and Chihuahua once daily.
Air-conditioned buses complete with television screens travel to Los Mochis from US border cities such as Nogales, Mexicali and Tijuana, as well as from Culiacan, Mazatlan, Guadalajara and Mexico City. Additionally, three ferries ply the waters between La Paz, Baja California Sur, and Topolobampo, the port for Los Mochis.
