With many beautiful pathways and plenty of rolling parkland, London, Ontario, truly is the ‘Forest City’ and a perfect place to visit. The light traffic, easy access and friendly people make this Canadian city even more attractive than its English namesake!
The many diverse attractions at the Banting House National Historic Site will have history buffs entertained for hours. The site is a good place to learn about one of the great moments of medical science in the 20th century - the discovery of insulin.
Another opportunity to step back in time exists at the Fanshawe Pioneer Village, which exemplifies southwestern Ontario life from the mid-1800s through to the early 1900s. For a taste of local native history, the replica Ska-Nah-Doht Iroquoian village, situated 32kms southwest of London on Highway 2, makes for an enjoyable afternoon. The village accurately reflects the archaeological evidence unearthed at several nearby prehistoric settlements.
To satisfy your artistic interests, there is the Grand Theatre, Orchestra London, and Museum London, as well as a clutch of excellent art galleries. Shoppers should head to London's Richmond Row or the Covent Garden Market. If you are here during the summer months, your visit would not be complete without a trip on the Double Decker Bus tour.
The picturesque town of Stratford is just a short drive from London, and is home to the prestigious Stratford Festival, a theatre festival that has been running since 1953. The core performances are Shakespearean, but there's other drama too, from Racine to O'Casey and Beckett.
London is conveniently located on southern Ontario’s main highway, the 401. From here, it’s a two-hour drive northeast to Toronto or an hour southwest to Windsor. London has a modern train station with frequent and reliable service courtesy of VIA Rail. Both the Toronto-Windsor and Toronto-Chicago routes pass through London several times a day. London International Airport has frequent connections to Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa and Detroit, among other North American destinations.
