Car Hire London Central - Marble Arch - Mini guide to London Central - Marble Arch
Marble Arch is one of the must-see monuments in London. It is located near Speakers' corner in Hyde Park. The Arch was originally the entrance to Buckingham Palace but was later moved to Hyde Park. Traditionally, only certain people are allowed to go through it being the old gateway to the Royal Palace. The designer of the Marble Arch was John Nash. The arch design itself is based on the Constantine Triumphal Arch located in Rome.
Its original location was The Mall and it stood as the gateway to the rebuilt Buckingham Palace. It was never entirely completed and the design was altered somewhat do to financial concerns. However, it formed an elegant entrance for many years. It was moved because the Queen's state coach was said not to fit through it. It is possible that it could be moved again in the future however for the moment it stands wonderfully as a fitting addition to Hyde Park. The Arch actually has three small rooms that are built into it and until 1950 were used as a police station. Marble Arch is served by an underground station of the same name and a road, which is to the north of the arch itself. The monument stands near Tyburn Gallows, which was used for public executions for more than 400 years.Car hire deals in: United Kingdom
