Mini guide to Ljubljana

Ljubljana, capital of tiny Slovenia, is one of Europe’s best-kept travel secrets. Following a devastating earthquake in 1895, the city was reborn and is now a composite architectural gem divided by the Ljubljanica River.

The central point of interest is Castle Hill, with its castle originating in the 9th century. Among other historical sights are the Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Bishop’s Palace and the Seminary. The lively market area runs alongside the Cathedral and Seminary. It houses an array of dairy, bakery, meat and fish stallls all within an impressive quasi-temple on the river. The Art Nouveau Dragon Bridge takes its name from the quaint green monsters on each of its four corners. The Triple Bridge has become the recent icon of the city. The Old Town, on the right bank of the river, is the only part of Ljubljana unharmed by the earthquake, and has the densest concentration of historical attractions, including the Town Hall, the Robba Fountain and brilliantly preserved medieval houses.

Wander through town to experience these memorable sights, as well as Ljubljana’s numerous museums, art galleries, tranquil parks and gardens.

Ljubljana has dozens of restaurants and bars, ranging from mellow cafes to frenzied student hangouts. Most of these are positioned on the riverside, perfect for taking in the sights and sounds of the city. Scattered throughout the city are numerous music venues, offering everything from classical to jazz, alternative and live music. There are also over 30 art museums and galleries, abundant cinemas, five large department stores and loads of exclusive shops and boutiques.

The city is well positioned to explore the nearby city of Trieste and the lovely Adriatic coast of Istria, with the Dalmatian coast further south. Slovenia is also known as the Switzerland of the Balkans, with its unbeatable Alpine scenery of the Julian Alps. One of the most popular resort areas to appreciate the beauty is picturesque Lake Bled, an hour north of Ljubljana.

Slovenia’s Adria Airways has links to a variety of major international airlines. It is connected to 17 countries, including all major European cities. Ljubljana is also easily accessed from Europe by train or bus, via northeastern Italy or southern Austria.
