Mini guide to Liverpool
Liverpool is a cosmopolitan, intriguing city, located in the mid-west of England. Famous, of course, for the Beatles, as well as the triumphs of its two football clubs, these days Liverpool is trying to reach celebrity stardom as a premier European city.
Liverpool is situated on the broad estuary of the River Mersey. The citys shipping industry began to decline during the 1960s, and the remnants of degradation are still sadly all-too evident. However, Liverpool still stands proud and its half a million strong population boast a sense of identity and a sharp sense of humour.
Many come to Liverpool to pay homage to the Beatles and there are several Beatles tours on offer, visiting well remembered places such as Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane and the site of the Cavern, where they started out.
Chinatown's Berry St restaurants offer excellent oriental cuisine and Slater street offers a good choice of eateries. Liverpool nightlife can be rowdy, especially during the small hours of the morning, but most areas are safe enough for visitors. Clubs and bars fill the central area of the city most nights of the week.
Two of the city's most famous pubs are located a short hop from the centre of the city, named the Philharmonic on Hardman St and one of John Lennon's favourite old hang-outs Ye Cracke, which can be found on Rice St.
The major suburbs in Liverpool are: Aigburth, Anfield, Broadgreen, Childwall, Croxteth, Edge Hill, Everton, Mossley Hill, West Derby and Woolton.
