The capital of Arkansas, Little Rock is an attractive town filled with fine historical sites and places of natural beauty. The town boasts several museums, galleries, colonial buildings and noteworthy mansions. Within a short drive of Little Rock youll find splendid national parks, clean lakes, hot springs and a stunning panorama of mountain scenery.
The Arkansas Museum of Science and History makes for an educational day out; while the Decorative Arts Museum showcases an array of marvellous toys designed by artists. Another museum great for the kids is the Museum of Discovery, which is located in the River Market District. This district is where youll find most of the citys restaurants and bars. Also of interest, the farmers market is just a bit farther down by the river.
Located in the Old State House, an eye-catching Greek Revival building, is a museum documenting Arkansas history. Alternatively, the Arkansas Territorial Restoration is home to original and restored colonial buildings adorned with beautiful gardens. In the summer months, visitors are afforded a look at Arkansas historical events, with actors re-enacting past events.
In the foothills of the Ouachitas, about 80kms from Little Rock, is the appealing spa town of Hot Springs, where you can find an abundance of recreational activities at the national park and nearby lakes. The exquisite Bathhouse Row district, lined with magnolia and elm trees, offers a number of good art galleries and boutiques.
Ouachita National Forest, west of Little Rock, is the home of the largest artificial lake in Arkansas. Driving in and around this beautiful area is breathtaking, as there is plenty of verdant forest land and scenic mountain views. Outdoor activities include: swimming, fishing, horseback riding and water sports. The Ozark National Forest is great for hiking and camping.
Little Rock is located in the heart of Arkansas. The Wilbur Mills Freeway (I-630) is the main east-west route through downtown, and links up with I-30 and I-430. Little Rock National Airport is located 6.4kms from downtown and offers flights to and from all major US destinations. To reach the city from the airport, you can take bus number 12, or catch a cab at a cost of about US$10.
